Automatic Grinding Machine A Practical Solution for Reducing CNC Tooling Costs

In recent years, the continuous rise in tungsten carbide prices has led to a steady increase in the cost of CNC cutting tools. For many machining companies, tooling has become a significant and recurring expense. As a result, more manufacturers are seeking effective ways to extend tool life and reduce operating costs without compromising machining quality.

Under these conditions, the automatic grinding machine has become an increasingly attractive solution. By enabling in-house tool reconditioning, machining workshops can significantly reduce their dependence on new tools and external grinding services.

Industry Challenges with Conventional Grinding Machines

Despite growing demand, many grinding machines currently available on the market present two major challenges. First, their initial investment cost is often high. Second, they typically require experienced and highly skilled operators, increasing training time and labour costs.

These limitations make conventional grinding equipment less accessible to many small and medium-sized CNC workshops. To better support machining enterprises and address these practical challenges, our company has developed a new generation of automatic grinding machine designed specifically for modern production environments.

MW-YH20MaX Automatic Grinding Machine

The MW-YH20MaX Automatic Grinding Machine is equipped with our independently developed, patented PLC control system. The machine is built using high-precision ball screw guideways, pure copper-core servo motors, high-quality collets, and protective bellows, ensuring stable operation and high efficiency.

An integrated cooling system allows the machine to operate reliably during continuous grinding. It is suitable for regrinding a wide range of cutting tools, including: End mills, Corner radius cutters, Ball nose cutters, Chamfer tools, Drills. This versatility makes the MW-YH20MaX a practical choice for general machining workshops as well as specialised tool reconditioning applications.

Working Principle and Control System

This automatic grinding machine adopts a multi-axis linkage control system, mainly divided into the following functional modules: Y-axis motor and transmission module, Y-axis motor and transmission module, Z-axis motor and transmission module, Z-axis motor and transmission module, W-axis motor and transmission module, probe module, cooling and lubrication system. Each axis is precisely positioned and speed-controlled through a servo driver and servo motor. Among them, the Y-axis is responsible for the position and feed control of the grinding wheel in the Y direction; the X-axis is responsible for the position and feed control of the tool in the X direction; the Z-axis is responsible for the up and down movement of the grinding wheel in the Z direction; the W-axis is responsible for the rotational speed control of the grinding wheel; the R-axis is responsible for the rotation and positioning of the tool during the grinding process. The extension and retraction of the probe is controlled by a spring mechanism and a proximity switch; grinding oil is circulated for cooling and lubrication through a water pump; the tool is firmly installed on the R-axis through a collet to ensure stability and safety during the grinding process.

Manual and Automatic Operating Modes

The control system offers two operating modes: Manual Mode and Automatic Mode.

Manual Mode is designed to meet special user requirements. It allows operators to perform coarse tool setting, grinding wheel adjustment, and workpiece positioning. Typical functions include grinding wheel jogging, motor start and stop, recording tool-setting positions, and returning all axes to their reference positions.

Automatic Mode is the core feature and main advantage of the MW-YH20MaX. In this mode, the machine operates in a simplified, highly automated manner. During grinding, the system performs linear compensation on the X and Y axes to offset grinding wheel wear. In addition, tool parameters can be adjusted based on the grinding results, ensuring consistent cutting geometry and repeatable performance.

This automated compensation capability reduces operator workload, improves grinding accuracy, and ensures stable results even during long-term operation.

As CNC tooling costs continue to rise, an automatic grinding machine is no longer a luxury but a practical investment for machining enterprises seeking long-term cost control and process stability. With its advanced PLC control system, multi-axis servo architecture, and user-friendly automation, the MW-YH20MaX provides a reliable and efficient solution for modern CNC tool regrinding.
